Chartway Federal Credit Union, Virginia Beach, Va., has raised more than $16,000 for the American Cancer Society. This year, more than 60 employees participated in the 1st Annual Elizabeth River Relay for Life. In addition, since January, employees started organizing fundraisers that included doughnut and bake sales, raffles, silent-auctions and car washes. But the largest single contribution came from an event sponsored by Chartway called the "Cookout For A Cure." Here, volunteers encouraged passers by, with signs and banners, to stop by the credit union for a quick bite to eat. Charging $5 a plate, the volunteers served up hamburgers and hotdogs with a side of chips and a cold drink under an outstanding spring day. Members, nonmembers and employees enjoyed a great meal while contributing to the fight against cancer. The event raised $1,400 towards the final total. Pan Am Horizons Federal Credit Union, Homestead, Fla., has sponsored a German Mark currency exchange at the Homestead Air Reserve Station to assist the 482nd Fighter Wing military personnel deployment to Laage Air Base, in former East Germany. Approximately 190 personnel were participants in this deployment to support the 93rd Fighter Squadron's training mission. Pan Am Horizons FCU special ordered the Marks for this unique event that guaranteed military personnel would have more favorable exchange rates prior to arriving in Laage. Philadelphia Federal Credit Union, Pa., has teamed up with the Girl Scouts of Southeastern Pennsylvania and raised $1,000 for their Take the Lead 2001 campaign. Proceeds from Take the Lead help train Girl Scout volunteers, operate camps, and provide programming to ensure that young girls are developing the values, skills and knowledge they need to succeed as tomorrow's leaders. In addition, PFCU held a silent auction to benefit the GSSP. PFCU purchased several admission passes to the Academy of Natural Sciences and donated them to three Girl Scout troops.
