FLINT, Mich. – Security Federal Credit Union has taken the concept of healthy body, healthy mind to a new level. The $209 million credit union has invested in its employees’ health by adopting a new weight management program. Approximately 37 individuals participated in the 10-week program delivered by McLaren Regional Medical Center’s dieticians, behaviorists and exercise specialists. “We wanted to provide a program for our employees that will help them feel their best so they may also perform at their best,” said Val Cooper, SFCU human resource director. “This program will reduce absenteeism and will help make SFCU a healthier, happier place to work. With a goal of reducing cardiovascular disease and promoting a healthier work environment, sessions focused on such topics as planning meals, cooking differently, personal responsibility and exercise. Part of the Worksite Health Promotion Program, the weight management plan is funded by the Michigan Department of Public Heath through the Genesee County Health Department. SFCU was granted up to $5,000 for program management and planning expenses. According to Cooper, employees gave rave reviews and particularly enjoyed working with the behaviorist, who provided them self-analysis tools to help identify their strengths and weaknesses.
