MADISON, Wis. – A new book from CUNA’s Center for Professional Development sets out to discover if ethics plays a role in the modern day credit union. The Power of Business Ethics by Dick Radtke serves as a practical guide for dealing with ethical issues in day-to-day duties. The handbook includes information on the ethical obligations of the CU toward its employees and vice-versa. In addition, it looks at a credit union’s ethical accountability to members, community and the law. Identifying credit unions as a special breed where statements of identity, branding and values are core marketing strengths, Radtke says that CUs have a special obligation to match the “people helping people” philosophy. “Ethics begin with each one of us, individuals acting on behalf of ourselves, our circle of family and friends, our business interests in the credit union and the communities of which we are a part,” said Radtke. “We need to be able to think through the implications of our actions, make decisions based on an examination of what is right and then act in a manner consistent with ethical decisions. We are all stakeholders.” For more information regarding The Power of Business Ethics, call CUNA at (800)-356-8010 ext 4157. -mbourjolly@ cutimes.com
